Why don't I get back the points I lost to a verified cheater?

Maybe they should have a reward function for catching cheaters like a "cheaters caught" badge or counter. I think it isnt about the rating points, it is about people feeling appreciated for the effort they put in. Catching a cheater is very hard and requires calm nerves, rational behind the report, and evidence on the report. Also there are people who just have a good judgement of intuition for finding cheaters too, and some of these smart people happen to be mods. :D (the best cheater catchers)

But yeah I would define cheater catching experience as a skill. Identifying if the moves are natural moves or unnatural moves is important. It shows you understand the ideas behind the moves and that you are truely an incredible player. I feel ya when you feel the need to be rewarded! Rating isnt the reward here though, maybe like a badge or some points or status or prestige. :P

Lichess will think of something haha.
I don't think they will do this: I have caught many many cheaters in my time here on lichess, and I know that it's really about caring about the site. I don't do it for a badge, I do it because I care about lichess and because I want everyone to know that they are versing a legit opponent. Lichess has always been about people doing stuff because they care: Their staff is basically all volunteers that care, they don't get paid or "rewarded" irl. I feel like giving a reward like this would take away from the spirit of lichess: Do it because you care, not because there's an actual reward.
Nah, Please give me a Badge of Honor that says I've caught 'x' amount of cheaters to earn and show that baby off for my opponents to see even in Zen mode just so they are aware of my cheater catching skills in hopes they would think twice before cheating against me. think of it as a neighborhood watch sign

Myself have played Stockfish 8 many times, as well playing against AI all my life and have a good feel for when my opponent is a engine. Sadly tho it's an effort I been feeling lately is not worth the time. Cheater gets banned, makes new account, cheats again and the cycle never ends. On top of the issue here, where we lose more then we gain back from the lost in rating points. I don't see any reason to report anymore.. is only more time wasted

Think what be a fun & amusing idea is have a program that locks cheaters away from playing legit players and puts them into a separate server of other cheating players. where none of them actually know they've been caught & locked away into a limbo world of online chess with other cheaters. even give them the illusion they are joining legit tournaments when actually that tournament is split into two servers. one for legits, one for cheats

Anyways, I like the Badge idea. think the logic behind lichess refund point system is fair as fair can be with the given problem. and it's clear that nobody likes a cheater, dealing with cheating but it's an issue that can't be hushed and should be talked freely among the community to help find the best solutions. Even FIDE is reaching out to the public on how they feel what is fair in regards to cheating

In the end I feel the best thing to do is accept it for now as apart of online gaming. surveys and statistics have shown about 40% of players cheat in online games. chess is no exception and likely higher due to how easy and accessible it is. The best we can do is not allow ourselves to tilt, see it only as a exhibition against the AI and learn from the game that just exposed your greatest weaknesses

Bottom Line: You become the better player, They learn Nothing
like to add a little more on that badge idea. it certainly gives players the incentive to report potential cheaters .. if that is most desired task to catching cheaters. why not?! what can possibly be the harm in having badge that represents such skill?
Soultego, the "separate server" idea is what lichess already has in place.

As for the badge, I don't think it aligns with the spirit of lichess.
Maybe there is a more dynamic way to recalc the rating points back to the account besides giving a fixed amount. For 200 rating points lost, yeah I agree, son't just refund 200 points, but maybe prorate it in a way that compensates the player. What if their rating is still minus 200 points and they haven't recovered? It might make sense to restore the rating points in some circumstances, but not in other situations.
It doesn't give a fixed amount. If you read the earlier links on how it works.
TCF_Namelecc and Soultego thank you for your time and feedback, same goes to all of you who in good faith shared your thoughts on this post.

Just to avoid a misunderstanding, I didn't use the word "reward". It's not about getting a reward, it's about being fair.
I was responding to Landy when talking about rewards (a badge)

I hope you now understand why lichess's current policy is fair, even though it may appear to not be so (If not, then refer back to Sazed's comment and my comment from page 1).

Have a nice day
